Why Learn to Sew?

Only about 25 years ago, sewing used to be part of the school curriculum together with cooking, carpentry, and other handicrafts. The young ones in those days knew how to work with a needle and thread. A few years down the road, the subject was slowly replaced by computer classes, and now there is hardly any school that offers sewing even as an elective subject. The sewing machine is no longer a basic household appliance. Back in the 80s, if you had an electric fan, you would most likely have a sewing machine.

A recent study showed that most sewers are over the age of 60. This means that almost an entire generation does not have any sewing skills or don't have the time to sew. Social and economic factors have forced mothers out of the home, and buying clothes has become the more convenient option due to economic conveniences and the lack of time and know-how.

No thanks to the internet and electronic gadgets, our children's hands have become "soft". In this age of swipe, tap, and click, most of them no longer have the fine motor skills that are developed from working with bare hands. Kids today seem to have become weak problem solvers and easily get frustrated when confronted with stumbling blocks.

Learning how to sew is a great way to train children how to work with their hands, focus, and solve problems strategically, logically and creatively... and, one of the most important things we tend to take for granted: how to follow step-by-step instructions!

Here are more valuable disciplines that kids can learn in sewing:

     •  Visualize and analyze how a garment is constructed

     •  Follow written instructions

     •  Carefully measure before cutting

     •  Solve problems and troubleshoot

     •  Develop patience and perseverance

     •  Work independently without much supervision

     •  Understand patterns and learn how to use them

     •  Build self-confidence

    •  Add fashionable touches to a completed garment

     •  Learn to appreciate sewing as a wearable art form

Sew Easy For Kids is here to try to bring back the valuable life skill of sewing and give kids an avenue to learn to be skillful with their hands. The goal is to present the lessons with hands-on practice and achieve success one step at a time.
